About
Our Senseis

At our not-for-profit Dojo, the backbone of our community is formed by our dedicated Senseis who generously volunteer their time, expertise, and passion for the art and practice of Karate.

These committed individuals embody the essence of dedication and discipline, selflessly imparting their knowledge to nurture the growth of each student. Without financial compensation, they lead by example, instilling values of respect, perseverance, and humility. Their voluntary contributions extend beyond the dojo, creating a positive and disciplined community where martial arts become a powerful tool for personal development.

Our Senseis are the heart of our not-for-profit Dojo, inspiring and shaping the journey of every karateka with unwavering commitment.

Ayumi
Townsend

Ayumi Townsend Sensei began her Karate journey in 2018, joining Karratha Shotokan Karate with her six-year-old daughter under the guidance of Lee Edwards Sensei.

Following the club’s affiliation with JKA-SKC (Japan Karate Association Shotokan Karate Coalition) in 2019, her gradings were conducted by Andrew Carey Sensei who is a karate instructor in Geraldton WA. She later continued training under Carl Wangemann Sensei, and in 2025 she achieved the milestone of Shodan.

For Ayumi, Karate is not a pursuit of overpowering others, but a discipline dedicated to cultivating the concept of Japanese martial arts: "Mind, Technique, and Body". Through consistent training, she has come to value the way Karate develops physical strength, sharpens focus, clears the mind, and instills perseverance and self-discipline.

As an instructor at Karratha Shotokan Karate, Ayumi Sensei is committed to fostering an environment where students learn respect, manners, and discipline through daily practice. Her teaching reflects the belief that Karate is both a path of self-improvement and a source of growth for both body and spirit.

Carl Wangemann

Head Instructor

Embarking on his Karate journey in 1984, Carl Wangemann Sensei began training in Bermagui, NSW under the late Emmanuel Drakos Sensei, affiliated with JKAA (Japan Karate Association Australia) Takahashi Sensei.

Upon relocating to Canberra in 1993, he continued his training with Ryan van Leent Sensei, affiliated with SKIA (Shotokan Karate International Australia) under the late Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa Shihan.

In 2018, a new chapter began as Carl moved to the Pilbara, and in 2020 he joined Karratha JKA SKC (Japan Karate Association Shotokan Karate Coalition) under the guidance of Keith Geyer Shihan. This journey culminated in the confirmation of Shodan in December 2021, followed by the attainment of Nidan in May 2023.

Devoting 110% to every chosen discipline, Carl has consistently encouraged fellow karate enthusiasts to push their physical limits.

For him, Karate is not only a form of physical fitness but also a path that instills self-discipline, coordination,

self-defence skills, and mental focus.

It contributes to personal development and confidence while fostering values such as respect, etiquette, and humility.

As a dedicated practitioner, Carl Sensei finds joy in teaching and leading by example at the Karratha Shotokan Karate Dojo. The reward lies in witnessing the growth and achievements of both junior and senior karateka. The dojo has also produced several junior state champions—a testament to the dedication of its Senseis and members.

Carl has also tested himself in competition, medalling at both State and National Championships, and represented Australia at the World Cup in Japan in October 2024.

In recognition of his contributions to the community, he was awarded Karratha Community Citizen of the Year 2025.

Appreciating, respecting, and welcoming all martial arts at a high level, Carl values their diverse philosophies, techniques, and cultural aspects. This broad perspective enriches his understanding of Karate as a way of life rooted in discipline and perseverance. Looking ahead, he is eager to continue his Karate journey in the Pilbara, contributing to the positive and disciplined community of martial artists. Oss!
